Celebrating the Manila Bulletin’s 125th anniversary, fashion designer Francis Libiran salutes the recognition being given creative industries

In the 1990s, pursuing fashion as a career, especially as a man, was a bold and often misunderstood choice in the Philippines. Back then, societal expectations rigidly defined gender roles, and the creative industries, particularly fashion, seemed unconventional or even taboo for men.  I faced some stigma as I stepped outside those norms, which made my journey as an aspiring designer a real challenge.

Society is becoming more accepting of diverse perspectives and creativity, once overshadowed by traditional careers, is being recognized as a powerful force contributing to our global presence.

Today, however, the landscape has transformed. There’s now a vibrant conversation about individuality, inclusivity, and breaking free from stereotypes, empowering people like me to embrace our unique identities and dreams. Once dismissed by some, fashion is now celebrated as an art form and a canvas for cultural expression and innovation. I’ve seen firsthand how society is becoming more accepting of diverse perspectives, and how creativity, once overshadowed by traditional careers, is being recognized as a powerful force contributing to our global presence.

Honestly, life feels so much better now as we are witnessing the barriers that once limited us and are now gradually being dismantled. Young, aspiring Filipino designers no longer have to face the same level of prejudice or skepticism as I did. They can passionately pursue their craft, knowing they contribute to a vibrant and supportive community that celebrates talent.

This progress inspires optimism for the future of Philippine fashion and all industries striving for inclusivity and acceptance.
