TACLOBAN CITY – Tagged as the “Boracay of the North,” the pristine coastline of Barangay Cabacungan, Allen, Northern Samar, also known as Caba Beach, beautifully illustrates the profound impact of sustainable tourism in uplifting local communities and preserving their natural wonders.
Caba Beach has transformed from a secluded sanctuary into one of the premier destinations in the province. With its golden sands kissed by gentle waves and lush greenery framing its shores, Caba Beach now attracts visitors eager to experience its breathtaking beauty and outdoor sports activities.
Through responsible travel practices, this once-hidden gem is fostering economic growth while ensuring that its environmental treasures remain safeguarded for generations to come.
This once-undiscovered paradise is now a thriving tourist destination, a testament to the power of community initiative and sustainable tourism.
The catalyst for this remarkable transformation? The vision of one man, Aljun Diaz, and the unwavering support of his community.
Diaz, a 33-year-old lawyer and owner of Buenos Diaz sa Caba Beach House and Resto, discovered the potential of his hometown during the pandemic.
While the world was largely shut down, Allen remained accessible, and Diaz saw an opportunity. He transformed their backyard piggery into a beach house for tourists. He capitalized on the pent-up desire for travel by launching free tour packages around Caba and Imaga Beach, introducing locals to water sports like paddle boarding through a youth-led club.
His initial spark ignited a wildfire of interest and excitement. Words traveled rapidly across various social media platforms, captivating the attention of influencers and adventure seekers alike. Soon, posts filled with stunning images and enthusiastic testimonials flooded timelines, creating a buzz that could not be ignored.
People from all walks of life began planning their visits, eager to discover the untouched beauty of Caba’s pristine shores, with its crystal-clear waters, soft white sands, and breathtaking landscapes calling out to those looking for their next great escape.
Buenos Diaz expanded, adding nine cozy rooms to accommodate the growing influx of tourists.
Other beachfront owners also established their cottages with the support of seed funding from the local government unit (LGU).
The LGU provided ₱30,000 to approximately 30 beachfront owners, facilitating the expansion of tourism infrastructure. Now Buenos Diaz welcomes 30 to 40 guests weekly, offering not only accommodation but also free-diving lessons from certified instructors. The establishment’s success is intertwined with a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.
Weekly beach cleanups and environmental fees are implemented, and local fishermen are educated on sustainable fishing practices. The initiative ensures that Caba’s natural beauty remains intact for future generations. Its impact extends beyond Buenos Diaz.
Mayor Jose Arturo Suan reports that Caba Beach now attracts an average of 1,000 tourists weekly, significantly boosting the LGU’s income.
“Since I assumed office in 2019, we’ve seen a ₱2 million annual increase in revenue, doubling to ₱19 million in 2024,” Suan stated.
He also highlighted Caba’s potential for longboard surfing, boasting one of the country’s longest surfing seasons and hosting an annual international competition.
Just a few meters from Caba Beach is Imaga Rock Formations, one of the most underrated surfing destinations that enthusiasts eagerly anticipate, particularly during this vibrant surfing season. With its breathtaking landscape, the area features stunning rock formations that create perfect wave conditions, attracting both seasoned surfers and beginners alike.
The thrill of riding the powerful swells while surrounded by dramatic scenery makes Imaga a must-visit spot for anyone looking to experience the excitement of surfing in a remarkable setting.
Caba’s journey is a beautiful balancing act – a harmonious blend of commercial growth and environmental preservation. While managing the influx of tourists presents challenges, the community remains dedicated to maintaining its unique charm and authenticity.
As Diaz describes it, their transformation is a “beautiful disaster,” a testament to the resilience and unity of a community determined to protect its piece of paradise.
