In celebrating Manila Bulletin’s 125th anniversary, we ask Bamba Bistro chef Tina Legarda if life is better and she says look around you
I remember entering my first day with shaking knees and sweaty hands. I used to question a lot why I even entertained the idea of being right smack in the middle of all that testosterone-filled kitchen banter.
You think you have it all figured out on your first year until you hit a bad day and let the pressure make you admit how exhausting it is to not have a voice.
Now after a very long time, I feel seen and, more important, I feel heard.
But here we are many years later—and now after a very long time—I feel seen and, more important, I feel heard. Not only as a girl inside the kitchen but also as someone who still falls in love with discovering and creating things that I think are delicious and having the pleasure of enjoying beautiful conversations with people (even strangers) who share the same love. There are so many of them out there these days.
Gaining the confidence to build and nurture a team will always be my favorite accomplishment. Life is better for sure. I just had to open and maybe (now that I’m older) squint my eyes a bit more to finally see why.
